The Time+Tide Shop Father’s Day gift guide

D.C. Hannay

Let’s hear it for dear old Dad. He gave you the ultimate gift (your very existence, although his part was easy), and likely instilled you with an early appreciation for watches as well. So this Father’s Day, show some gratitude to your father (or father figure) with something extra special that proves they raised you right. Here are a few of my personal picks, available right here from the Time+Tide Shop.

For the tech-savvy dad: Norqain Wild One

Wild… it’s in the name. The cutting edge Norqain Wild One, features high-tech construction in a bold, lightweight sports model. Designed in collaboration with Jean-Claude Biver, the Wild ONE line begins with its innovative case construction. The multi-layered design features their proprietary Norteq carbon fibre composite for the 42mm outer cage, secured to an inner titanium and shock absorbing rubber structure that can withstand forces of 5,000 g. My favourite variant is the black and khaki combo, which brings a vibe of pure tactical cool. The laser-cut black dial has a multi-level effect that must be seen, and upon closer inspection, consists of an intricate pattern that features the interlocking double “N” of the Norqain logo in three layers. The rest of the specs inspire the confidence of all Norqain timepieces, with the NN20/1 in-house chronometer movement, 200 metres of water resistance, screwdown crown, and sapphire crystals front and back. The included rubber strap features a mesh texture in two-tone black and khaki green, a stylistic choice that’s right up my alley.

For the frugal father: Boldr Venture Staghorn

Boldr has long been something of an insider’s secret among watch collectors. A winning combination of adventurous designs, fantastic build quality, and sought-after specs, all at “how do they do it?” prices, have made Boldr a favourite among the microbrand cognoscenti. One of their best and most versatile models is the Venture diver in the unique Staghorn colourway. It’s a real standout compared to more conventional-looking dive watches, with its 38mm titanium case’s angular lines and hooded-lug profile. Other thoughtfully designed features include a matched titanium bracelet, a full 200 metres of water resistance, unidirectional timing bezel, sapphire crystal, screwdown crown at 4, and a clean, graphical look to the matte beige dial. It’s supremely legible, with broad sword hands, no date window, and a healthy dose of Japanese Superlume. A bronze-toned bezel insert and minute hand are the perfect complements to the dial. Powered by the stalwart Seiko NH35A automatic, it’s as reliable as Dad himself, and the overall value proposition is just off the chart.

For the outdoorsy old man: Isofrane and Tropic vulcanised rubber straps

Now that you have the watch sorted out, it’s time to buy it some new shoes for when things get active. No matter if Dad enjoys surfing, hiking, or golfing, a rubber strap is a fantastic choice for all manner of outdoor adventures. Originally created for divers, a good rubber strap is durable, salt water resistant, and easy to keep clean after working up a sweat. But not all rubber straps are created equal. TPE-based straps can feel stiff and plasticky, and don’t get me started on those stain-prone lint magnets made from silicone. You want pure, vulcanised rubber for the maximum in durability, flexibility, and all-day comfort. Isofrane (left) has long been the choice of professional divers, with its heavy-duty construction, quality buckle hardware, and vented design for staying cool under the toughest conditions. Best of all, it comes in a wide range of summery colours, the ideal match for the bright tones of dials from the likes of Doxa or Seiko. And if Dad’s more of a vintage watch fan, it doesn’t get better than the original Tropic strap (right). With a ‘60s-leaning perforated design, it’s the perfect companion for that classic Seamaster, and the Tropic is recognised as one of the most comfortable straps ever created. Trust me, I know, because most of my vintage divers wear them. They’re also available in a full spectrum of colours: just pick the right lug width, and wrap it up.

For the jet-setting begetter: Billstone Voyager 2 travel case

Dad’s always had your back, so now it’s time to return the favour. If he’s a world traveler, there’s no finer way to protect his watches than with this 2-watch travel case from Billstone. Available in luxe brown leather, it features robust, crush-resistant construction, a soft velvet lining, two separated cushions (each capable of securing a 45mm wide timepiece), and three heavy duty snap closures. It’s one of the most handsome travel rolls you’ll find, a smart complement to all manner of fine leather luggage. He’ll be proud that he raised such a discerning kid, even if he still has to remind you to turn off the lights.

For the artsy patriarch: Illustrated Watch framed art prints

The office. The den. The man cave. Dads need their own space, and these bold, minimalist art prints from Illustrated Watch are a tasteful finishing touch for his domain’s decor. Created by Minneapolis-based artist Anthony Lane, you can choose Dad’s favourite timepiece from a wide selection, including classics from Rolex, Omega, Panerai, Patek Philippe, Tudor, Heuer, and more. The white outline renderings pop against assertive colours, and are available in your choice of black or white solid wood frames. Printed on museum-quality giclée matte paper, the 12” x 16” prints are protected under Acrylite and include hanging hardware, so Dad only needs to break out the hammer and level. And you know he’s got those, along with every other tool in existence.
